Hey fellow ADHD entrepreneurs, If we haven't met yet...my name is Ellen Argo, and I'm an entrepreneur with ADHD.
But I like to think of it as 'an entrepreneur powered by ADHD.'
It's got a nice ring to it, doesn't it? It took me a while to appreciate the unique electricity of my mind, channel it, and not let it overpower me. And today, I'm here to share with you my journey, the struggles I've encountered, the victories I've celebrated, and most importantly, the growth that's come along the way.
You know, entrepreneurship is like trying to build a plane while you're free-falling from the sky. And when you've got ADHD, sometimes it feels like someone's also handed you a Rubik's cube just for the fun of it.
But let's start at the beginning. Back when I was just setting foot into the world of entrepreneurship at the wee age of 23, I remember being enthralled (and terrified to be honest) by the possibilities. I saw a thousand paths sprawl before me, each more exciting (and overwhelming) than the last. But herein lay my first struggle: the intoxicating allure of novelty. Like a shiny new toy, each idea seemed irresistibly compelling. I'd set off down one path, only to be lured away by the next exciting prospect. That's the ADHD brain, always seeking stimulation, always craving novelty.
And then there was the challenge of focus, a dragon that seemed impossible to slay. As an entrepreneur, there's a constant barrage of tasks demanding your attention. For someone with ADHD, this can feel like trying to catch a hundred butterflies with a single net. Our minds dart here and there, chasing one idea, then another, often leaving tasks half-finished in the process.
Let's not forget the overwhelming rollercoaster of emotions. We ADHDers are not just daydreamers, we are deep feelers, and empaths. The highs are Mount Everest high and the lows... well, let's just say we've seen the Mariana Trench more times than we'd like. Every failure feels like the end of the world, and every success - well, it's like we've just invented sliced bread! But here's the thing, my fellow ADHD entrepreneur friends, each struggle has a silver lining.
Over time, I learned that the same brain that flits from one idea to the next is also a powerhouse of creativity. Our capacity to think outside the box, to see connections others can't, is a mighty weapon in the entrepreneurial world.
That elusive focus? It's a fickle friend, but when it does show up, it's called hyperfocus. I've had times when I've been so engrossed in my work that hours seemed like minutes. Harnessing that ability has been my secret weapon, my 'superpower,' if you will.
And as for the emotional rollercoaster, it's taught me resilience. Every low has been a lesson in picking myself up and dusting myself off. With each high, I've learned to savor the moment, to cherish the success.
So yes, being an entrepreneur with ADHD is a challenge, a whirlwind, an adventure. But every day, I choose to face that challenge head-on. And in doing so, I've discovered a strength, a tenacity, a spark within myself that I never knew existed.
So, my dear ADHD entrepreneurs, embrace your struggles, your chaos, your uniqueness. Own your journey, and remember, you're not alone. We're in this wild ride together, building our planes, solving our Rubik's cubes, and free-falling all the way.
